Making the Perfect Cup of Coffee
For coffee lovers a coffee machine is the ultimate kitchen appliance. There is nothing like an espresso coffee made from freshly ground beans. But coffee machines make more than just coffee - with a little bit of know how, you can make coffee just like a professional barista.
Types of Coffee Drinks
Espresso/Short Black
Espresso is the straight coffee produced from a coffee machine - after freshly ground coffee has had hot steam passed through it. A cup of espresso should not exceed 30ml. To coffee connoisseurs, espresso is the quintessential form of coffee, the purest way to enjoy its aroma and flavour.
Cappuccino
A favorite in cafes and bars, a cappuccino is easy to prepare at home. A cup should be about 150ml, containing equal parts of espresso, steamed milk and froth - topped with a light dusting of chocolate powder.
Latte
Served in a wide mouthed glass, this is prepared by using a shot of espresso and 3 times as much steamed milk - topping off with a light foam froth.
Espresso Macchiato
A macchiato is prepared with one shot of espresso 'stained' with a small quantity of thick foamed milk in the centre of the shot - the milk slowly sinking into the coffee.
Cafe Mocha
This drink is prepared with one shot of espresso, mixed with two teaspoons of chocolate powder, topped with steamed milk.
Affogato
One shot of espresso and one shot of liqueur, such as Frangelico, served over a scoop of vanilla ice-cream.
Long Black
A style of coffee made by pulling a double shot of espresso over hot water. The order in which a long black is made - water first then espresso - is important as reversing will destroy the 'crema' from the espresso shot.
Vienna
A latte topped with sweetened whipped cream and powdered chocolate.
Irish Coffee
A Vienna or Latte with a dash of Irish Whiskey.
Tips for the Perfect Cup
Once you know which coffee you are going to make, a couple of important things to note:
- Make sure your machine is CLEAN. Empty your coffee grounds and clean the steamer nozzle after use.
- Grind the coffee fresh - just seconds before you make your cup
- Use a firm tamp - give a decent push to compact it but not so much force that it is concrete!
Now you just need to go into your local Retravision store and purchase your coffee machine!
